Peniche Fortress

Fortress & Museum

A key building for the defence of the kingdom on its Atlantic side, the fortress is distinctive because of its typical star-shaped layout, with the structures of the Baluarte Redondo (spherical bulwark), the Torre de Vigia (watchtower) and the Santa Bárbara chapel. As well as being an important defensive garrison, the fortress has performed various roles throughout its history, the most famous of these being political prison. It houses the Municipal Museum, the evocative core of which relates to resistance to the Second Republic (Estado Novo) dictatorship.
